For the Climber Map mobile app. Last updated 29 July 2026.
Climber Map is a map for outdoor climbers. It is not an advertising business and does not make money from data about you. This page describes everything the app collects.
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Name, email address, profile picture, account identifier | To create and identify your account | Stored on our server |
| Climbs you bookmark | So your saved list is there on any device you sign in to | Stored on our server |
| What you do in the app: climbs and crags you open, searches you type, filters you set, destinations you download | To see which parts of the app get used, and which climbs are missing | Stored on our server for 30 days |
| Error and crash details, app version, phone model, operating system version | To find and fix bugs | Stored on our server for 30 days |
| Feedback you type into the app, and the diagnostic details shown to you alongside it | To answer you and fix what you reported | Emailed to our support address |
| Your device's GPS location | To show where you are on the map | Stays on your phone |
Signing in is required to use the app. Most people sign in with Google: Google confirms who you are and passes us your name, email address, and profile picture. We never see your Google password.
You can also sign in with an email address and password. In that case we hold your email address, and your password only as a scrambled form of it that cannot be turned back into the original.
We do not ask for your phone number, date of birth, address, or payment details, and there is nowhere in the app to enter them. Beyond the above, the only things attached to your account are the climbs you save and the diagnostic records described below.
If you grant location permission, the app draws your position on the map and can recenter the map on you. That position is read on your phone and used to draw on the screen. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. We do not store your location and we do not keep a history of where you have been.
The one thing we do record is whether you granted or declined the permission, so we know how many people use the app without it. That is a yes or no. No coordinate you have ever been at leaves your phone.
Location is optional. Declining it leaves the rest of the app fully usable.
Wall photographs shown in the app are published by us as part of the guidebook. Standard builds of the app have no way to upload a photo, so the app does not read your photo library. A separate contributor build, used by people who survey crags for the guidebook, can upload photos; those are stored with no link to the contributor's account.
The app records what you do in it, so we can fix what breaks and build what gets used. This is our own record on our own server — there is no third-party analytics company involved, and none of it is used for advertising.
What a record looks like:
What is never in it: your location, your password or sign-in tokens, your photos, or the contents of anything else on your phone.
These records are deleted automatically after 30 days, and deleting your account deletes them immediately.
The app has a feedback button on every screen. When you send a report, we receive an email containing what you wrote, your account's email address and account identifier, and a short block of technical details about your app and phone.
That technical block is shown to you in full, before you send, behind "What gets sent with this" — so nothing travels with your message that you have not had the chance to read. It contains the app and update version you are running, your phone's platform and operating system version, the installation and session identifiers described under Diagnostics and usage, which destination was open, which climb or crag you were looking at, your current filter settings, and how many climbs you have saved.
It does not contain your location, your password or sign-in tokens, your photos, or a screenshot. Your account email is included so we can reply to you; if you would rather not be contacted, say so in the message and we will not write back.
Feedback emails live in our support mailbox rather than in the app's database, so unlike diagnostic records they are not on the automatic 30-day deletion. We keep a report while it is useful for fixing the thing you told us about, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
These companies process data on our behalf, and only to run the service:
Map and route downloads are ordinary file requests to Cloudflare and are not tied to your account. Which crags you open inside the app is recorded separately, on our own server — see Diagnostics and usage above.
Your account is kept until you delete it. Deleting it removes your account, sign-in credentials, display name, profile picture, saved climbs, and diagnostic records immediately and permanently.
Diagnostic and usage records are deleted after 30 days whether or not you delete your account. We keep no long-term history of what you did in the app.
Feedback you emailed us through the app is the one exception: it sits in our support mailbox, not the database, so deleting your account does not remove it. Ask us and we will delete it — see Feedback you send us.
If you contributed corrections to the guidebook, those corrections remain, because other climbers rely on them — but they are no longer linked to you: your name, email, and account id are erased from the record. Full details, and how to delete your account without the app installed, are on the account deletion page.
You can delete your account at any time from inside the app. If you want a copy of what we hold about you, or want it corrected, email us and we will sort it out. Depending on where you live you may have further rights over your data under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA; we will honour those requests regardless of where you live.
Climber Map is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or how we use it, we will update the date at the top of this page and note the change in the app's release notes.
